JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Delaware split action Saturday as the Hens swept Saint Peter's, 7-0, to open the day before falling to Wagner, 4-0, to conclude the day's play.
The Blue Hens (8-14) came out strong against the Peacocks (1-16) and swept an opponent for the second straight match, something Delaware has not done since 2010.
Sophomore Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) paired with freshman Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany) for the first win of the morning in No. 2 doubles, 6-2.
Junior Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) and senior Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) followed by capturing the team doubles point with the 6-1 top-flight victory.
Dominick Perez (Bethesda, Md./Gonzaga College) opened singles action with his 14th win of his rookie campaign by defeating Jonathan Paredes, 6-1, 6-1, in the fifth flight.
In No. 3 singles, Casselbury also collected a 6-1, 6-1 decision while Wong clinched the match with the same score over Andres-Sebastian Rojas in the second spot.
Lankes posted the top-flight 6-3, 6-1 win against Ivan Knezevic before Flematti defeated Gabriel Russotto, 6-2, 6-0, in No. 4 singles.
Freshman Luis Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) concluded play with his third straight triumph with the 6-2, 6-2 win over Cuong Lam.
In afternoon action against the Seahawks (11-7), Wagner pulled out doubles wins in the second and third slots before cruising to three straight victories in the fourth, fifth and first flights.
[vs. Saint Peter's]: “We got off to a nice start and clinched the doubles point early. This gave us nice momentum that continued into singles play. Our confidence grew as we played through this match.”
[vs. Wagner]: “We played excellent at number one doubles today, serving well and staying aggressive on the net. Unfortunately, we could not get the same consistency at numbers two and three. In singles, we were about to win at number two and three, but we played the match to clinch and we could not finish those matches. We didn't play our best tennis today, but we competed well and our attitudes were strong.”
