NEWARK, Del. – On a night celebrating the 2016 season, the No. 3 Delaware field hockey team put on an offensive show in front of a record crowd at Fred P. Rullo Stadium. With a record 811 fans on hand, the Blue Hens (2-1) unveiled their 2016 National Championship sign before cruising to the 9-1 home-opening victory over Dartmouth.

The total team effort saw eight Hens with at least one point on the night. Senior Taylor Lister (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) led the way by tying a

Delaware single-game program record with four assists while freshman Lotte de Koning (Vreeland, The Netherlands/RSG Broklede) collected her first career goal and then became just the sixth-ever Blue Hen to register a hat trick as a freshman.

Junior Lisa Giezeman (Leidschendam, The Netherlands/Sin-Maartens/Boerhaave) added three points on two assists and a goal while classmate Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltekeplatz) picked up two goals of her own.

Freshman Femke Strien (at left; IJsselstein, The Netherlands/Cals College Nieuwegein) also tallied her first career goal and assist in the win.

Redshirt sophomore Sydney Rhodes (Middletown, Del./C. Milton Wright (Md.)) earned her first career victory in goal and held a shutout for 35 minutes of action.

Evie Bird posted the lone goal of the night for the Big Green (0-1) while goalie Hailey Valerio picked up 12 saves.

I'm happy that we shared the ball and kept it simple, those two things are important if you want to do what we did today from a performance aspect.”

“It was incredible to see so many people come out to support us and help us recognize our accomplishments. Immediately afterwards we were able to refocus on ourselves and on the game instead of everything that was going on around us. Of course we were excited with it being the home opener, but we came out and continued to play Delaware field hockey. We need to stay consistent and be disciplined in how we play and that helped us tonight.”

HEN SCRATCHINGS

     ·     The Blue Hens outshot Dartmouth, 30-4 and also held a 15-2 advantage in penalty corners.
     ·     Delaware has outscored opponents, 17-4, in three contests so far this season.
     ·     UD's nine goals are good to tie for third in program single-season history while the team's nine assists is good for second.
     ·     The Hens last scored at least nine goals in a 9-0 victory over Towson on Oct. 23, 2015.
     ·     Fred P. Rullo Stadium's previous attendance record was 750 against Syracuse in 2006.
