NEWARK, Del. – A tremendous year of Delaware football was capped off on Sunday evening in jammed packed Clayton Hall at the annual Blue Hen Touchdown Club Senior Awards banquet.
Hundreds were on hand to help honor the 18 seniors on the squad, who concluded their careers as Blue Hens this fall. Head Coach Danny Rocco, who helped guide the Blue Hens to seven wins and a near FCS playoff berth in his first season, was on hand to present the awards and recognize the senior student-athletes, managers, trainers and interns who worked so diligently for the program.
Delaware native Bilal Nichols was the big award winner, honored as the Outstanding Defensive Player, Co-Outstanding Lineman, Captains Award and the Baker-Taylor Memorial Award. Nichols was unable to attend the event due to his participation in the prestigious Senior Bowl on Saturday in Mobile, Ala. Nichols' grandparents, Adova and Dolores Bolton, were on hand to accept the awards on his behalf.
The Taylor Award, presented each year since 1948 and the oldest award bestowed upon a UD student-athlete, recognizes a senior member of the football team who made outstanding contributions to the program.
Diante Cherry took home the two awards on the night, being named the Outstanding Offensive Player and Outstanding End. Tim Sheridan was the Outstanding Special Teams Player, Blaine Woodson was the Co-Outstanding Lineman with Nichols, Anthony Jackson was the Unsung Hero and Jalen Kindle took home the Newark Elks Club Award, honoring the top scholar athlete in the senior class.
Kyle Yocum, Brody Kern and Nichols were all honored by Coach Rocco with the Captains Award.
Other seniors honored during the event were DeAndre Davis, Maurice Harley, Thomas Jefferson, John Nassib, Grant Roberts, Alec Scheetz, Jake Trump, Justin Watson, Brandon Whaley and Tommy Wilmoth.
