PHILADELPHIA – Blue Hen freshman Jake Steinberg scored his first career goal in overtime to give the University of Delaware men's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 victory over Drexel Wednesday night at Vidas Field.
The Blue Hens improved to 4-8 on the year, and remained in fourth place in the CAA table with a 3-2 mark for nine points. Drexel dropped to 7-4-2 overall including 1-4-1 in league play.
The victory also gave UD head coach Ian Hennseey the 100th win of his career.
Just over five minutes into the first overtime period John Schroeder collected a pass down the right sideline, dribbled along the endline and fed a cross to Steinberg, who fired a low shot from eight yards out into the left corner of the net to set off the UD celebration.
Delaware dominated the match, holding a commanding 19-2 shot advantage including a 7-2 margin in shots on goal. The Blue Hens also took eight corner kicks while limiting the Dragons to just two.
Drexel struck first just 45 seconds into the match when Chris Donovan collected a through ball from Kwesi Allen and fired a shot from 18 yards out past UD goalkeeper Todd Morton.
Delaware answered in the 37th minute when a Dragons defender committed a handball off a Robert Campbell shot. Fede Prieto took the penalty kick and hit the left goalpost, but the ball bounced back to Prieto who slid it into the right side of the net to even the match at 1-1.
The Blue Hens had numerous other chances, with Prieto, Noa Benninga and Timo Hummrich each recording three shots, but could not find the back of the net until Steinberg's game-winning goal.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"This was a very good win. I'm so happy we go the three points, this gets us one foot in the door to returning to the CAA playoffs. We're not there yet, but I'm very happy and pleased for the players particularly after the start we had."
On the winning goal:
"We made good decisions in the box. John Schroeder took the time and Jake made a great run. Everybody's happy for Jake, so he's going to enjoy that one tonight."
Jake Steinberg
"It was a big win. I feel like we dominated the game possession-wise. We out-shot them and had more corners. On the goal I saw a long ball to John. He got around the outside back and I peeled off. He just slipped it back to me and I one-touched it across the goal. It's just a good feeling to get my first college goal."
