NEWARK, Del. – They knew they'd have to bring their "A" game against another ranked opponent and the No. 18 Blue Hens did just that Friday evening with their 2-0 victory over No. 20 Virginia at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
Delaware (7-6) scored early and then added an insurance goal with three minutes remaining while holding the Cavaliers (5-8) scoreless for UD's third shutout win of the season.
Senior Lisa Giezeman captured her fifth goal of the year in the 12th minute as she collected the pass from classmate Greta Nauck and put it in about three yards out from the right side.
Freshman Pia Freudenberger gave Delaware its second and final goal of the contest in the 67th minute off a penalty corner with assists coming from Nauck and sophomore Lotte de Koning.
Senior Sydney Rhodes earned her second career shutout victory while recording three saves.
Amber Ezechiels and Greta Ell led Virginia with two shots apiece.
• The Blue Hens have won two straight over Virginia and are now 8-9-1 all-time against the Cavaliers, including a 4-2-1 series advantage in games played in Newark.
• Delaware outshot Virginia, 13-7, and also held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
• Lisa Giezeman moved into a tie for 17th in program history alongside Michele Rosenbaum (1987-88) with 32 career goals.
• Greta Nauck moved into a tie for sixth in program history alongside Sara Hills (1996-99) with 27 career assists.
