Andie Hanus recorded 20 digs
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team was able to evenly distribute the ball and sweep William & Mary, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) inside the Bob Carpenter Center on Friday night. With the win, UD improves to 9-12 overall and 3-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association while W&M fell to 5-13 and 1-8 in the league.
"It felt good tonight, any conference win feels good," head coach Sara Matthews said. "We've been talking about playing one match at a time and focusing on our next opponent and treating everyone the same. They (William & Mary) were quite improved from when we played them two weeks ago so it was a good win for us."
Delaware was stellar on both offense and defense, and were led defensively by junior Andie Hanus, who had 20 digs in the three set win.
"Andie (Hanus) was great tonight," Matthews added. "She had 20 digs in three sets -almost seven a set – and she did a great job of not only digging balls but putting us in a good situation defensively where we can distribute the ball evenly."
Hanus added five assists to her match-high 20 scoops, and even recorded a rare libero kill.
"It's all about how the block sets up in front of you," Hanus said. "If they're leaving clean lanes and setting up well, it's pretty easy to do my job behind them."
Seven Blue Hens recorded at least one kill, with junior Maria Bellinger leading the way with 15 terminations on 38 swings for a .263 attacking clip. Junior Bailey Pearlman saw double-digits with 10, while junior Cailey Bracken had nine. Seven of Bracken's nine hammers came in the clinching third set. Senior Brooke Robertson recorded six while sophomore Courtnie Roberts had four. UD had 48 team kills while holding the Tribe to just 31.
Following Hanus' 20 scoops, Bellinger posted her eighth double-double of the season after 10 kills for the second-straight match. Roberts had nine and Bracken had eight. Nine Blue Hens recorded at least one dig and UD outdug W&M, 64-57.
Roberts directed the offense to a .254 attacking clip, the second-highest for the Blue Hens in conference play this season. Roberts helped UD put down 48 kills with 39 assists, her second-highest for a three set match this season.
Delaware recorded five team blocks, with Julia Hayes posting two assisted blocks and solo stuff. Senior Brooke Robertson and Bellinger had two blocks, and Bracken and Roberts each had one.
The Blue Hens return to the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on Elon.
