ELON, N.C. – Blue Hen freshman Timo Hummrich scored the only goal of the match in the 69th minute as the University of Delaware men's soccer team picked up a crucial 1-0 shutout win over Elon Wednesday night at Rudd Field.
Delaware, which picked up its first road victory of the season, improved to 3-7 on the year and moved into fourth place in the CAA table with a 2-1 mark for six points. Elon dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league play.
Midway through the second half, Hummrich collected a feed from David Vavrous from 10 yards out on the right side and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net at the 68:06 mark for the only goal of the match.
Hummrich, who scored both Blue Hen goals in the 2-1 overtime win over Charleston on Sept. 22, now leads the team with three goals on the year. Vavrous was credited with his first assist of the campaign.
The UD backline would make the lead hold up, as the Blue Hens allowed just one shot on goal during the match. Delaware senior Todd Morton needed to make just one save in goal to earn his third victory of the season and his first shutout.
Both teams attempted just seven shots on the night, while Delaware held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"This was an excellent conference win on the road for us tonight. I'm really pleased for the players, given the amount work they've put in and the injuries we picked up. Full credit to the players. Our goal every season is to qualify for CAA postseason and this win sets us up for that heading into a critical game at home to Hofstra this Saturday."
