Blue Hens Drop 17-3 Decision to #12 Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – For much of the past decade, the CAA has been the best conference in the FCS. The depth of the league has been on constant display with the battles each week. At times over the past two years, the league has had as many as seven teams in the top-25.
On Saturday, that depth was once again on display with a dogfight between the University of Delaware and the Seawolves of Stony Brook. In a physical, defensive battle, 12th-ranked SBU pulled away in the second half to come away with the 17-3 win.
"We're disappointed with how we played today. We didn't execute in a bunch of facets of the game and you can't do that against quality opponents and expect to win," head coach Danny Rocco said. "We've got to quickly learn from this and improve because we've still got a chance obtain one of our goals entering next weekend."
Four different Blue Hens had double-digit tackle performances, led by a season-high 13 from senior safety Nasir Adderley, who also added his fourth INT of the year to his stat line. Classmate Troy Reeder had his sixth double-digit performance of the year with 11 on the afternoon to become the first Delaware player since 2013 (Patrick Callaway) to register 100 or more tackles in a since.
Offensively, sophomore DeJoun Lee had one of his best days yet with 128 all-puporse yards, including 71 yards on 15 carries. Senior Charles Scarff had five catches for 43 yards, while classmate Vinny Papale extended his consecutive games with a catch streak to 14.
"We simply weren't good enough today. We didn't do our jobs in any area and that's not acceptable," Adderley said. "As seniors, we have to challenge our team as a whole to get better this week and finish what we've been working for since camp started."
Defense was the name of the game early and often with neither team getting much going and both teams coming up with stops in the red zone on multiple occasions in the first half.
SBU would finally light the scoreboard as time expired in the first half, punching through a field goal to take a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Seawolves would extend their lead to 10-0 with a TD five minutes into the second half, but the Blue Hens would respond, marching down the field, but came up empty in the redzone for the third time on the day.
Delaware would get on the board with 12 minutes left to play when Frank Raggo booted a 28-yarder through the uprights. It was the 40thFG of his career, which ranks second all-time.
After the Blue Hens defense made the stop they needed, Delaware would try to get the offense going, but would be stifled by a stingy SBU defense, which helped convert a Blue Hen turnover into a TD to make it a 17-3 cushion.
Delaware would try to get two drives started late, but were unable to get any more points on the board as Stony Brook sealed the 17-3 victory.
"We've said since the beginning of this thing that we needed to get to eight wins and we have that opportunity in front of us next week. That has to be our foucs. We have to turn the page. Learn from this, get better and work to obtain one of our goals," senior Mario Farinella said.
