NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Blue Hen Family blood lines run deep and that was on display recently as the junior and senior classes of the University of Delaware men's lacrosse program headed to NYC to connect with lacrosse alumni in the program's first career development and networking event.
With the University Club in Manhattan serving as a fantastic venue for the event, with the help of alumni such as Bob Waters ('82) and Alex Moeckel ('08), the current Blue Hens sat down with an alumni group that included Chris Guttilla ('84), Steve Shaw ('86), , Mike O'Rourke, Esq. ('64), Myles Tintle, Esq. ('86), Jared Mehl ('98), Dennis Byrne ('99), Liam Wertheimer ('00) and Elijah Conte ('16).
The alumni group shared their experiences from their playing days at UD, spanning the early 1960s to a few years ago and just about everything in between. A co
mmon theme among the comments from our alumni panel was the work ethic and perseverance necessary to accomplish worthwhile goals in life.
"The experience for me was like no other. These successful men took time out of their busy day to talk to us about our future once we graduate here. They were helpful, knowledgeable and great people. They were willing to do anything to help us have a successful future after our time here at UD," junior Matt DeLuca said. "They gave us tips, advice, business cards and even personal contact information just in case we needed anything. Our alumni here at UD are second to none, they truly care about us and our success on the field and more important off the field. The New York City trip was just an overall great opportunity and I can't thank our coaching staff, Jen Judy and everyone else involved in setting up that great event. It just gave me another reason to be proud I am a Delaware Blue Hen."
It was an energizing day for the Blue Hen family and one that continued to echo the philosophy of the program to prepare each student-athlete to exceed not only on the field, but even more importantly in life.
"Spending time at The University Club with alumni was a very rewarding experience, as we were able to begin bridging the gap from college into the workforce. The experience really put things into perspective, as we are very fortunate to be Delaware Blue Hens and to have such a supportive alumni base," senior Thomas Aloe said. "Similar to athletics, life after college is extremely competitive, and connections made through networking can be that differentiating factor. Moving forward it is reassuring to know that our alumni are willing and able to help us in any way possible."
