Blue Hens’ Win Streak Snapped With 80-65 Home Loss to Navy

NEWARK, Del. – Navy used a strong second half shooting percentage and a commanding rebounding margin to record an 80-65 victory over Delaware Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Midshipmen (3-5) went 15 of 27 from the field in the second half, including 5 of 7 from three-point range, to pull away from the Blue Hens. Navy also enjoyed a 45-32 edge on the boards including 22 offensive rebounds, 18 of which came in the first half. Cam Davis and George Kiernan each scored 13 points in a balanced effort for the Mids, while Hasan Abdullah and Danny Ogele added 12 apiece.
Delaware (7-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped, shot 49.0 percent from the field but went just 6 of 15 from the foul line. Freshman Ithiel Horton, the current CAA Rookie of the Week, again led the way for the Blue Hens by pouring in a season-high 22 points. Eric Carter contributed 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Anderson added nine points and five assists. Matt Veretto tied Carter for the team lead with eight boards, to go with five points on the night.
Navy took a 33-26 lead into the half, but Delaware quickly scored the first seven points of the second period to pull even with 17:29 remaining. Although the Blue Hens could never regain the lead, a Horton three-pointer brought UD within a point at 53-52 at the 10:23 mark.
Delaware was within 67-61 following a dunk by Carter with three and a half minutes to play, but the Midshipmen scored the next seven points to pull away.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"We held Navy to 33 percent in the first half but gave up 18 offensive rebounds, and that's not good enough. We got a little fatigued in the second half, and then they got confident and made some shots. We just didn't do enough on that end of the floor while we weren't able to have much success offensively. We just didn't have the spirit and the energy we've had the last week or so, and that's on me. I have to do a better job of getting our guys ready to play, and we need everybody to be ready to go and give us something. We were searching tonight, but just didn't find the right combination to click."
Ithiel Horton
"We need to stay humble. We were on a winning streak and thought we would roll over them, but they came in here and whipped us. It's really frustrating, we just couldn't get a stop in the second half. We weren't together tonight, and they were."
Game Notes:
• Carter has reached double figures in all 10 games this year

• The Mids improved to 24-8 all-time vs. UD and defeated the Blue Hens for the second straight year
