NEWARK, Del. – Winning can be contagious. That's the power of confidence.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware track & field program will look to do after a strong showing at the Delaware Open on Sunday afternoon at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium in which the Blue Hens won 11 events to claim the top spot at the meet.
The Blue Hens will look to carry that momentum into the next weekend and the CAA Championships in Williamsburg, Va.
Freshman Myrissa McFolling-Young (Smyrna, Del.) continued her outstanding freshman season, winning both the shot put and the discus. Her throw of 150' 11” in the discus put her second in school history, while her throw of 44' 4 ¼” was the fourth-best mark in program history. Her discus throw was over five feet further than her previous personal best.
Delaware ruled the throws events with Kristina Valko taking the top spot in the javelin and Melissa Zegeer winning the hammer throw. Freshman Olivia Duffy grabbed a top-three finish in the discus, shot put and hammer throw for the Blue Hens.
Freshman Halimah Roberson uncorked a personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 36' 1 ¼” to win the event, while Andriene Rose claimed the win in the long jump and Cassandra Wahl won the high jump to help the Blue Hens sweep the jumps events.
Jenny Hineman won the pole vault by clearing 11' 7 ¾” for her second win of the spring season.
On the track, Jeanette Bendolph won the 800m (2:23.87), Tory Engel won the 400m hurdles (1:08.45) and Maddie Olivere won the 3000m (10:55.27).
Delaware now takes the week to prepare for the CAA Championships, which begin in Williamsburg on Friday, May 4.
