Spending time in Florida during the summer is nothing new for a college student.
Rising senior Sarah Hall of the Blue Hens women's tennis team is spending her summer in the Sunshine State for a whole different reason than the typical trip south for sunshine and beaches. Hall landed a sports science and medicine internship with the Women's Tennis Association, whose headquarters are in St. Petersburg, Fla.
“This is almost a dream scenario for me to get the chance to have a hands-on learning experience in the sport I love, among some of the best in the world. I couldn't ask for a better opportunity,” Hall said.
The West Orange, N.J. native arrived in Florida last week and will be there until late August learning from some of the top physical therapists in the country. There's a team who rotates coverage at tournaments around the world while Hall will be back in the headquarters doing anything she can to learn and pick the brains of her colleagues.
“I'm still adjusting to them name dropping Serena or other big time pros that I've been fans of for years, it's been a really cool experience and I'm excited for the rest of the summer,” Hall said.
There's less than a two-percent chance of becoming a Division I women's tennis player and even slimmer to make it on the pro tour, the opportunity to stay connected to the sport that she's been playing since she could hold a racquet is something that Hall truly relishes.
“I know that my playing career will be coming to end pretty soon, so to have a chance to build relationships with the top organization in the sport, it's something that really means a lot to me,” Hall said.
An exercise science major at Delaware, Hall will be looking into PT school in the future and knows that the lessons learned and relationships formed this summer could open up a world of opportunities in her future.
“This is a sport that I truly love, it's something I've been doing since I was a little kid, to have the chance to build relationships with people who are working at the highest level, is something that isn't lost on me. I'm truly grateful for this opportunity.”
