LANCASTER, Pa. – Competing against the best in the country is something that only a selectgroup of athletes get a chance to do during their lifetimes.
That's exactly what Sydney Rhodesof the University of Delaware field hockey program did recently as she was selected as part of 100 athletes to showcase their skills in front of coaches and selectors for the USA Field Hockey Olympic Development Pipeline.
"We're really excited for Sydney. She played very well at the Young Women National Championship this summer and I am pleased to see that the USA Field Hockey Selectors agreed by inviting her to the Development Junior National Camp," head coach Rolf van de Kerkhofsaid, "Sydney had a very good spring as a Blue Hen and choose to continue her development through the USAFH High Performance this summer. I know she is having a lot of fun in goal now and will be even better prepared to become our starting goalkeeper at the University of Delaware this fall."
Rhodes spent nearly 10 days at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex, first competing as part of the Young Women National Championship, which brought together the most elite female collegiate and post-collegiate field hockey players in the country for a five-day, eight-team tournament.
From that event, the select group of athletes was selected to the U-21 and Development Junior National Camp.
"I am very proud to have been selected, first for the Young Women's National Tournament and then again to compete at the Women's Developmental Junior National Camp," Rhodes said. "It was a tremendous experience with a high level of competition and I know it will help me become a better keeper for the Blue Hens."
Rhodes will be back on campus in Newark in early August for preseason camp with her Blue Hen teammates. The Blue Hens begin their year at Ohio State on Friday, August 24that 4 p.m.
