NEWARK, Del. – For a second straight year, a member of the University of Delaware field hockey team is being recognized among the top female student-athletes in the entire country.
Emmeline Oltmans, who was named the CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year earlier this year, was recognized as one of the CAA's nominees for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year award, which honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of outstanding female college student-athletes.
"Congratulations to Emmeline for earning the nomination for the NCAA Woman of the Year. As her teammates and coaches, we remember Emmeline as a true team player who always focused on making the team better, and doing what she had to do herself to contribute to that goal," head coach Rolfvan de Kerkhof said. "She earned the respect from her UD field hockey family on and off the field and allowed her stellar academic and athletic performance speak for itself. Although she is a very humble person, she should be very proud of being our university's nominee for this prestigious NCAA award in 2018."
Last year, Oltmans' former teammate Esmee Peet was one of the two CAA nominees for the award.
Athletically, Oltmans was a four-year starter in goal, finishing her career with 63 wins, while ranking in the Top-10 in five statistical categories in program history. She was a two-time First Team All-CAA honoree and played an enormous role in Delaware's remarkable run to the 2016 National Championship.
This past year, she posted a 15-5 overall record in net and helped UD capture its fifth consecutive conference championship. In 20 games played, she was ninth in goals against average (1.28) and goalie win-loss percentage (.737) among all Division I players.
Off the field, the Netherlands native earned four consecutive CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll accolades, along with back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-American nominations. This past summer, Oltmans was a research fellow alongside Darcy Reisman, associate professor of physical therapy, where she helped conduct research on patients recovering from a stroke.
She has compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.78 in Biological Sciences during her time at Delaware.
"On behalf of UDFH, I would like to thank Emmeline for all she has done as a Blue Hen for our field hockey program and university the last four years," van de Kerkhof added. "We are looking forward to see how her UD student-athlete experience will continue to serve and inspire her to make a positive difference to the people around her."
