RICHMOND, Va. – Expectations are once again high for the University of Delaware field hockey team.
The Blue Hens, who have won five consecutive CAA Championships, were selected once again as the preseason favorite by the league's coaches. In addition, senior Greta Nauck was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and senior Lisa Giezeman and Lotte de Koning earned Preseason All-CAA team accolades.
Delaware, who has won 84 games over the past five years, returns seven starters from last year's team and a loaded incoming class of newcomers. Three of the Blue Hens top four scorers are back in 2018.
Nauck, who earned All-American honors each of the past two seasons, led the CAA and ranked second in the country with 25 goals in 2017. The Krefeld, Germany native has earned All-CAA each of her first three seasons with the Blue Hens.
Giezeman was part of the potent Delaware attack last year, earning All-CAA Second Team honors after scoring seven goals and tallying six assists last season. She is a two-time All-Region honoree and has started 45 consecutive games for the Blue Hens.
de Koning is the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year after being a stalwart in Delaware's midfield last fall. She started all 20 games. She finished third on the Blue Hens with 26 total points coming off nine goals and eight assists.
Delaware opens up the year on Friday, August 24 when it heads to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
