MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia defender Ryan Kellogg scored two second half goals to lead the Mountaineers to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Delaware Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The match remained scoreless until the 62nd minute, when Spencer Myers crossed a ball from the right side that was headed into the top of the cage by Kellogg from eight yards out.
Nine minutes later Kellogg collected a low feed from the right side by Nic Short and delivered a shot in the bottom right corner of the net to give West Virginia (6-4) an insurance goal.
Both teams registered nine shots on the night, while the Mountaineers put six on goal to the Blue Hens' three. Ryan Mertz had the best chances for Delaware (2-7), as his header off a corner kick went wide in the second half before his late shot was deflected over the net by WVU goalkeeper Steven Tekesky.
Blai Palmi, making his second start of the season, posted four saves in the Blue Hen goal.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Despite our lack of goals, the players certainly created enough to get on the board, but it's just not dropping for us at the moment. We have crucial matchups coming this week and I know the lads will be looking to improve and continue to climb the table on the road against Elon."
