RICHMOND, Va. – Last spring, the University of Delaware men's lacrosse program returned to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
Needless to say, expectations have been raised for the Blue Hens and those expectations are evident with the 2019 season just over a week away.
Delaware was picked third in the Preseason CAA Coaches' poll with senior Austin Haynes and junior Charlie Kitchen both earning Preseason All-CAA accolades.
The Blue Hens were tied for third in the preseason poll with Hofstra, behind only UMass and Towson.
Haynes returns as the Blue Hens top defender, ranking in the top-10 in the nation and led the CAA in caused turnovers per game. He finished with 26 caused turnovers on the year and ranked third on the squad with 35 ground balls. Haynes was locked on the primary offensive threat for the opposition, as well as stepping into the X on several occasions in 2018.
Kitchen had a breakout sophomore season, leading the league in goals per game and finished with 37 goals and 14 assists in 2018. He enters 2019 with a 17-game goal streak and has found the back of the net in 28 of his 29 career games. The 37 goals were the most scored by a Blue Hen since Curtis Dickson in 2010.
Delaware opens up the 2019 season next Saturday, February 9 when the Blue Hens travel to take on the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's.
