NEWARK, Del. – Delaware opened Colonial Athletic Association play Friday evening with a disappointing 68-43 loss to James Madison at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (5-8, 0-1 CAA) were wounded by poor shooting as UD registered season-lows in points (43), field goal percentage (.254), field goals made (17), 3-point field goal percentage (.091) and free throw percentage (.364).
Graduate student Makeda Nicholas led the Hens with nine points while junior Rebecca Lawrence tallied eight points and six rebounds. Freshman Jasmine Dickey and junior Samone DeFreese each added six points and six rebounds for Delaware while Dickey also finished with two assists and two steals.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Natasha Adair
"The outcomes of games will never be about the opponent. There will always be bigger, stronger, faster teams. The outcome is all about fight, heart and pride. We didn't have the fight that I know we have, and we didn't meet the standards of Delaware basketball tonight. We got to the rim, but you can't shoot 8-for-22 from the foul line and think you're going to win. I am disappointed in our effort, but this is not an indication of who we will become. It's a long season and this group will fight, and I will challenge them with consistency. We just didn't play with the intensity or fight that I know we have."
Junior Samone DeFreese
"One game won't define us for the rest of the season, but this is a huge wakeup call. We didn't follow through on the fundamentals that we've been learning since we were little kids and we didn't do the little things that we needed to do."
