STORRS, Conn. – No. 10 Delaware had multiple opportunities, but in the end No. 3 Connecticut outlasted the Blue Hens, 3-0, at the Sherman Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Hens got off a game-high five shots early in the first quarter but were unable to finish on the occasions.
Senior Ally Pollak and junior Femke Strien led UD with three shots apiece while Pollak contributed two shots on goal.
Redshirt senior Sydney Rhodes collected four saves in 51 minutes of play while sophomore Lizzie Gaebel did not register any statistics in nine minutes of action.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Rolf van de Kerkhof
"I'm proud of our team for their strong performance against one of the nation's toughest teams in Connecticut. We had a very good first half and a decent second half. We had opportunities to take the lead during the first quarter, which would likely have changed the game script later. Although we didn't, we took another step forward improving our possession, overall defense and excellent team play. The bench gave us a lot of energy and helped in our player rotations and sustaining or on-field performance and presence."
"We are work in progress with our offensive output against NCAA caliber teams so it is nice we have another couple of weeks to further fine-tune our scoring before the CAA Tournament and when we do what we are capable of, also in NCAA Tournament."
"We are looking forward to return home at Rullo for our next CAA game versus Towson this Friday."
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
· Friday, October 18 – Towson at No. 10 Delaware – 5 p.m. – Fred P. Rullo Stadium (Newark, Del.)
· Sunday, October 20 – No. 10 Delaware at Penn – 1 p.m. – Ellen Vagelos Field (Philadelphia, Pa.)
· Friday, October 25 – No. 10 Delaware at Hofstra – 3 p.m. – Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium (Hempstead, N.Y.)
