Holy Cross Rallies For 3-2 Triumph Over Blue Hens
10/16/2019 9:52:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware men's soccer team twice took the lead but Holy Cross rallied back for a 3-2 win over the Blue Hens Wednesday night at windy Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware struck first in the 13th minute when Timo Hummrich fed a long ball to Jacob Rubini, who blasted a shot from 18 yards out into the top right corner of the net for his first goal as a Blue Hen. However the Crusaders pulled even three and a half minutes later as Max Krause fed Dylan Scanley from the left side for a goal from 10 yards out.
The Blue Hens went back in front in the 23rd minute, as David Vavrous drilled a corner kick from the right flag directly into the cage to post his first career goal. But Holy Cross equalized again in the 32rd minute when Rory Birse headed home a corner kick from Krause.
The match remained deadlocked until the 85th minute when Jack Ostrosky fed a long ball to Scanley, who dribbled past UD goalkeeper Renan Thomazo before knocking in a shot from near the left endline for the game-winner.
Both teams recorded 11 shots on the night, while Delaware held a slight 10-8 advantage in corner kicks. Thomazo made five saves for the Blue Hens, while Holy Cross keeper Bobby Hurstak stopped four shots for the Crusaders.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I give our guys credit today for some really good stretches of possession and for overcoming a lot of the injuries we're dealing with right now. It was good to score two goals and I thought we had the game in hand, but credit to Holy Cross for coming back and scoring late. Our focus is now on our last three games against William & Mary, Hofstra and Drexel hoping to get into the CAA playoffs."
