WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary broke free from a halftime draw by scoring four second half goals as the Tribe defeated Delaware, 5-1, Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium.
The Tribe opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Diba Nwegbo collected a cross from Zachary Hosseinian, and after falling to the ground, backfooted a loose ball into the net from six yards out.
Delaware pulled even in the 34th minute on a loose ball off a corner kick, as David Vavrous backheeled a pass from the right endline to Timo Hummrich, who delivered from close range for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The teams headed into the break knotted at 1-1, but William & Mary scored twice on set pieces in a 40-second span early in the second half to take control. Tanner Shane headed home a corner kick in the 54th minute, while John Eberle knocked home a free kick from Alfredo Bozalongo less than a minute later.
Julian Ngoh then scored a pair of goals in the 71st and 74th minutes to conclude the scoring.
The Tribe held a 19-6 advantage in shots, while Blue Hen goalkeeper Renan Thomazo made five saves in the UD net.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Our guys gave all they had tonight. Timo did well to equalize going into halftime, but we had a two minute span where we gave up two set-piece goals that left us chasing the game and a little exposed. Credit to William and Mary for capitalizing when they could for the win. We are still alive for a possible playoff berth which may come down to the last game, so we will try to get the lads back on their feet and fighting for that spot."
