HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra scored two goals in the first half and added three more in the second as the Pride defeated Delaware, 5-0, Saturday night at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The Pride struck first in the 17th minute when Frederik Rieper collected a loose ball in front of the net and scored from six yards out to give Hofstra the early lead. Less than five minutes later Storm Strongin blasted a shot into the top right corner of the cage from 15 yards out to make it a two-goal game.
Matthew Vowinkel then scored three times in the first 20 minutes of the second half as the Pride pulled away.
David Vavrous, Mark Battle, Ryan Mertz and Faruk Mohammed each recorded a shot for the Blue Hens, although none were on target. Goalkeeper Renan Thomazo tied his season-high by making nine saves in the UD net.
Despite the loss, Delaware remains in contention for the final berth in the upcoming CAA Tournament. The Blue Hens need to defeat Drexel next Sunday night during their final regular season game, and have Elon not win both of its final two games, to clinch the sixth seed in the conference playoffs.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"The last playoff spot can go to any one of three teams heading into the last week, which is not unusual in this competitive CAA conference. It's senior day for us and we are home so we have all the motivation to send our seniors on their way with a post-season berth as a parting gift this Sunday."
