NEWARK, Del. – Goals by Timo Hummrich and David Vavrous propelled Delaware to a dramatic 2-1 Senior Night victory over Drexel Saturday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium as the Blue Hens secured a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
Delaware, which earned the sixth seed in the championship, will take on third-seeded Hofstra Friday on the campus of second-seeded James Madison in the first round.
The Blue Hens struck first in the 17th minute when Hummrich fired a laser from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Drexel pulled even in the 72nd minute as Harrison Coron collected a cross from the left side by Griffin Mallas and scored from 10 yards out to knot the match at 1-1.
Delaware went back in front with 10:58 remaining when Robert Campbell served a cross into the box that was headed by Jacob Rubini. The ball appeared to be headed to the top right corner of the goal when David Vavrous tapped it in for the game-winner.
The Blue Hens then held off Drexel from there to post their sixth consecutive victory over the Dragons.
Drexel held an 11-9 shot advantage and a 10-4 edge on corner kicks, but UD goalkeeper Renan Thomazo made four saves in the Delaware goal.
The Blue Hens honored seniors Robert Campbell, Arno Masson-Viale, Faruk Mohammad, Halvard Ramstad and Vavrous in a pregame ceremony before they played their final match at Grant Stadium.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I'm so happy for the seniors. We knew it was going to be a tough battle against Drexel, and it was. I thought Drexel was terrific tonight, and it required all hands on deck for us. But from the team that started to the people who came off the bench, I think the effort was terrific and to get two wonderful goals for the win gives us a chance in the CAA playoffs."
"The first goal by Timo was a world class goal at any level. It doesn't get much better than that, not just in college soccer but in any competition. It's in his arsenal and in his range, so it was fun for a good crowd to appreciate him. It's been a hard season and a struggle to find consistency with the injuries, but to give the seniors a win, those guys are ecstatic so I'm happy for them."
David Vavrous
"It's a really big win for us. We really wanted to win so we can make it into the league playoffs. It was a great cross from (Robert) Campbell, and (Jacob) Rubini won the header. I thought it was going in but I wasn't sure, so I just tapped it in."
