Plummer records her first double-double with three Blue Hens in double figures
CHARLESTON, S.C. – It was a dominant defensive showing from the Delaware volleyball team Sunday afternoon to snap a five-match losing streak behind freshman Ayala Plummer's double-double to complete the season sweep of Charleston, 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 25-18, 28-26), at TD Arena.
It was the first double-double in Plummer's young career with 12 kills and 11 blocks, the most rejections by a Delaware freshman since Paige Erickson had 12 in 2007.
The Blue Hens were able to erase a five-point deficit in the first set, and scored four unanswered with senior Bailey Pearlman at the service line to make it 18-17. Senior Maria Bellinger was responsible for three of Delaware's final four points in the set.
Pearlman was the second of three Blue Hens in double figures with 10 kills to go along with four blocks and an ace. Bellinger paced everyone with 17 kills, eight digs and two rejections on the afternoon.
The Cougars came storming back to take the second, but Delaware responded to win the final two, including a back-and-forth decisive fourth set where the Blue Hens overcame a late four-point deficit.
Trailing 19-15, Delaware scored four unanswered, three via attack errors, before freshman Lani Mason tied the set at 19. The teams would trade blows from there, before Delaware rattled off the match's final three points when Pearlman and Mason putaway back-to-back kills before Pearlman and Plummer teamed up for a denial to close things out.
After eclipsing the 1,000 digs mark on Friday with 32 digs, senior Andie Hanus was phenomenal once again with 29 this time around to secure the Blue Hens' back row.
Freshman Ezgi Basaranlar was efficient in setting up the Delaware attackers with 49 assists, five blocks and five digs.
It was a vital victory for Delaware approaching the conference tournament and the Blue Hens will look to continue that momentum, back in Newark when they host James Madison Nov. 2 at the Carpenter Sports Building.
