Blue Hens Clinch Second Seed With 3-2 Overtime Thriller Over UNCW

NEWARK, Del. – As you enter the Delaware women's soccer practice fields, there's a sign that lists the four pillars of the program, "Humble. Hard-working. Hungry. High-Energy."
This year's roster is the embodiment of those four words.
On a day that the Blue Hens celebrate six student-athletes that have been crucial to the program's turnaround, Delaware won yet another thriller, with a 3-2 overtime victory over UNCW on Sunday afternoon at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium. The win secured the second seed and a first- round bye in next week's CAA Tournament.
Sophomore Sara D'Appolonia's boot from just outside the top of the box in the 95th minute gave Delaware it's program-record fifth overtime victory of the year. It also gave the Blue Hens their 12th overall win of the year, marking the most in a season since 1994.
Senior Dani Kabat and redshirt freshman Anna Diffendal scored the Blue Hens' first two goals on the day with Diffendal launching a ball over a leaping UNCW keeper in the first half, while Kabat extended the lead to 2-0 in the second half with a rocket off a loose ball.
What They Said
"It's honestly hard to put into words how proud I am of this group. They fight, they work and most importantly they love each other. It's evident every time they step on the field. They decided during the spring that this was fall was going to be different. They were hungry and wanted to win for each other. The success we've had so far this season is a byproduct of the belief and work they put in leading up to these moments." – head coach Mike Barroqueiro
"This is such an incredible feeling and something that we've worked so hard for. Each and every girl on this team has pushed each other and made us better. That's what has helped us to this success. We're so happy for this moment, but we're still hungry and want more heading into the CAA Tournament." – sophomore Sara D'Appolonia
