KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Nate Darling exploded for 37 points while fellow guard Kevin Anderson added 32 as Delaware completed a weekend sweep at the Sunshine Slam tournament with a 91-79 win over UTSA Sunday afternoon at Silver Spurs Arena.
Delaware, the only Division I team with four victories, shot 51.8 percent from the field including 13 of 25 from three-point range. The Blue Hens also finished 20 of 26 from the foul line and held a 40-32 rebounding margin.
Darling went 12 of 19 from the field, including 8 of 10 from behind the arc, during his career day and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Anderson also established his career-high by finishing 11 of 18 from the floor and 7 of 8 from the foul line to go with three treys, and joined Darling on the All-Tournament Team.
Ryan Allen scored eight points before suffering a sprained ankle in the first half, while Justyn Mutts also contributed eight points and Collin Goss grabbed a game-best nine rebounds.
Delaware jumped out to a 16-4 lead just four minutes into the contest and did not trail from there. After UTSA pulled within 33-26, the Blue Hens scored the next 12 points to take a 19-point advantage on two Mutts free throws at the 5:16 mark.
The Roadrunners cut the margin to 47-37 at the break, before an early eight-point surge early in the second half made it a 55-39 game with 18 minutes to play. UTSA got within 59-53 just over four minutes later, but Delaware pushed the advantage back to 73-59 midway through the period and was never seriously threatened down the stretch.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"Nate Darling obviously gives us scoring punch with his ability to shoot the three, and I can't say enough about Kevin Anderson today. He made two huge plays against Southern Illinois, and was fabulous today controlling our offense. Kevin has been extremely coachable during his career and I've talked to him about becoming a leader. He was aggressive on the offensive end and shot well from the three-point line. I'm thrilled to win these three games down here and am really happy with our group."
Nate Darling
"I got in the zone where the ball was constantly going in, and was just living in the moment. I've built confidence in myself and my teammates, and Kevin and Ryan take the pressure off me as well. UTSA started doubling me and Kevin really took over down the stretch, so kudos to him."
