NEWARK, Del. – Delaware junior guard Tee Johnson served as a bright spot Tuesday evening as the Blue Hens came up short to Delaware State, 67-64, at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Johnson, who is in her first season at Delaware after transferring from Tallahassee Community College, registered 20 points to go along with three steals, three rebounds and one blocked shot.
Senior Samone DeFreese added her first double double of the season by finishing with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
In what was a back and forth affair, the Blue Hens had multiple opportunities to capture and hold on to a lead, including a 14-point scoring run in the third quarter that put Delaware ahead by eight points.
With 13 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Paris McBride knocked down a huge 3-pointer to bring things within one at 65-64, but the Hornets captured two free throws to seal the win.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Natasha Adair
"Delaware State was the better team today. I thought the bright spot for us was Tee Johnson. Her grit, her heart and her tenacious defense were spectacular. I just wish we had more of that today collectively. You know an in-state rival is going to come in and give you everything they have. Coach Caputo has done a phenomenal job since his arrival there. We have this sense of urgency right now and we have to realize possessions are everything. Time in sports is everything. And everyone wants to come out with a win. So, you have to take care of the little things. When you get opportunities, you have to fight to finish. We will continue to fight because that's what we do. That's what Hens do."
