Three Takeaways From Monday Night's Win Over Delaware State
12/17/2019 10:30:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Just over 48 hours after scrapping with No. 20 Villanova to the final whistle, Delaware men's basketball responded with an 86-78 win over its Route 1 rival Delaware State at the 76ers Fieldhouse in Wilmington, Del., Monday night.
On a day where Delaware checked in at 122 in the season's initial NET rankings (2nd highest in the Colonial Athletic Association and just two spots behind William & Mary), the Blue Hens picked up their 10th win of the season. Here are three takeaways from Monday's victory:
1. Dylan Painter Made A Statement In His Delaware Debut
Dylan Painter, the mid-year transfer from Villanova, was eligible for the first time Monday night, and was impressive in his first game wearing a Delaware uniform. Coming off the bench, Painter scored a team-high 19 points in just 18 minutes on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting night.
The Hershey, Pa., native checked into the game after the first media timeout and immediately contested a shot and pulled down a rebound on the defensive end. Moments later, a nice post move got Painter a lay-up and drew a foul, where he knocked down a free throw to complete the three-point play.
"I was really anxious before the game. I just went back to my roots: defend, rebound, and play hard. If I do that, everything else in the game comes to me," Painter said. "Once that first one went down, it was like alright, I'm back. I got this, we're good to go."
The next Delaware points came when junior guard Nate Darling dumped off a baseline pass for Painter to dunk home and draw yet another foul. In all, the redshirt junior forward had four different and-1 plays on the night in addition to several powerful dunks.
The big man's skillset, in conjunction with starting forward Collin Goss (who had nine points against the Hornets, including the Blue Hens' first six points of the second half), gives Delaware yet another diverse and dangerous weapon on the offensive end.
"He was smiling ear to ear in shootaround today ready to compete," head coach Martin Ingelsby said. "Just gives us a presence inside, a guy that can finish around the rim. Guys like playing with him."
2. Delaware's Bench Stepped Up
On a night where Kevin Anderson was battling an illness and Justyn Mutts got into early foul trouble, the Blue Hens' bench put up a season-high and much-needed 31 points. Obviously Painter's 19 was a big part of that, but freshman guard Johnny McCoy also matched his career high with seven points, finishing a pair of impressive drives and knocking down a three-pointer.
"Really proud of our bench," Ingelsby said. "Johnny McCoy was fabulous, especially defensively, gave us some good drives and made a three."
Redshirt freshman forward Aleks Novakovich also knocked down a three while freshman guard Ebby Asamoah drained a pair of free throws after a Delaware State defender pulled him back by the jersey on a fast break attempt, resulting in an intentional foul. The first-year Hens all contributed solid defense as well.
3. Justyn Mutts Finished Off Another Highlight Dunk
When operating at full capacity, Delaware basketball is a sight to behold. Mutts started the sequence by poking a ball away from a Hornet on the defensive end. Ryan Allen collected the loose ball and fired a pass forward to Darling to start the break. Ever the scoring threat, Darling drew the attention of the Delaware State defenders in transition and threw a lob for Mutts that he finished with style.
The Blue Hens wrap up non-conference play with a visit to LIU on Friday, Dec. 20 before opening the CAA slate with home games against UNCW on Saturday, Dec. 28 and College of Charleston on Monday, Dec. 30. Be sure to take advantage of the 12 Days of Deals to find the best ticket package for you!
