BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Delaware rallied from a 15-point deficit in the final seven and a half minutes of regulation to force overtime but could not pull off the comeback as the Blue Hens dropped their non-conference finale to Long Island University, 82-75, Friday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
Delaware trailed 59-44 with 7:44 on the clock before scoring six consecutive points, but a three-pointer by the Sharks' Ty Flowers extended LIU's lead to 64-56 with 2:41 remaining.
However Ryan Allen answered with a three-point play, before Nate Darling buried a three-pointer and then scored in the paint to tie the game at 64-64 with 46 seconds left.
LIU then missed a three-pointer giving the Blue Hens a chance to win in regulation, but Delaware turned the ball over before Flowers misfired on a long triple at the buzzer.
Both teams scored at will during the extra session, and two free throws by Darling made it a 75-75 game with a minute to play. But Flowers converted a three-point play to put LIU up for good and the Sharks added four foul shots to seal the victory.
Darling led Delaware with 20 points, while Justyn Mutts posted his sixth double-double of the year with 17 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. Allen finished with 16 points, while Collin Goss was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points.
Raiquan Clark paced four Sharks in double figures with a game-high 24 points.
Martin Ingelsby
"This game was a testament to LIU, they executed offensively and really sped us up on defense. We had the ball in a tie game with 30 seconds to go with a chance to win the game, but just didn't get it done. I didn't call time out because I didn't want to play against a set defense, but we didn't execute like we wanted. This is a tough one going into Christmas."
