NEWARK, Del. – Delaware put five players in double figures and knocked down 12 three-pointers as the Blue Hens cruised to an 82-68 win over UNCW in its Colonial Athletic Association opener Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Nate Darling again led the way with a game-high 21 points and buried five triples, while Justyn Mutts narrowly missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Anderson contributed 11 points on the night while Ryan Allen, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark, chipped in 10 points and a career-high six assists. Dylan Painter was the fifth Blue Hen in double figures with 10 points, while Collin Goss added seven.
Delaware shot 52.8 percent from the floor including 12 of 23 from three-point range, went 14 of 15 from the foul line, and handed out 18 assists on 28 buckets.
The teams were tied 18-18 midway through the first half, before the Blue Hens took the lead for good with an 11-point spurt to go up 29-18 on an Anderson three-pointer at the five-minute mark. Delaware eventually took a 16-point advantage before settling for a 43-29 margin at the half.
The Blue Hens then opened the second period with a 9-1 run, going up 52-30 on a three-point play by Goss with 16:15 to play. Delaware extended the margin to as much as 26 points at 67-41, and although the Seahawks made a late charge, the Blue Hens never led by less than 12 the rest of the way.
Martin Ingelsby
"I challenged our guys before the game to share the basketball and get the ball moving. I thought we did a good job recognizing what defense they were in and making the extra pass. We have firepower, and when we're unselfish we're difficult to defend. We emphasized playing inside-out, and our big guys made good decisions. Ryan Allen is such an important piece for us, and he's really grown at the offensive end where he's not just a jump shooter. He's grown up in our program, and scoring 1,000 points is a heck of an accomplishment."

"It's big to start off CAA play with a win and take care of a home game. Scoring 1,000 points feels good, I had no idea it was coming up. We have dominant bigs and shooters on the perimeter, we just need to do a better job of finishing games."
