Charleston Rallies in Second Half For 75-63 Win Over Delaware
12/30/2019 9:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NEWARK, Del. – Charleston used a key run over the final eight minutes of the game as the Cougars pulled away late for a 75-63 win over Delaware Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Kevin Anderson hit a three-pointer with 9:10 remaining to give Delaware a 53-52 lead, while two Justyn Mutts free throws put the Blue Hens in front 55-53 with 8:11 remaining.
However Charleston's Brevin Galloway immediately answered with a triple, sparking a 10-point Cougars run that gave the visitors a 64-55 advantage at the 3:53 mark.
Ryan Allen stopped the bleeding with three free throws, but Galloway countered with another three-pointer to put the game out of reach.
Nate Darling paced Delaware with 17 points, while Anderson was the other Blue Hen in double figures with 11 points. Allen and Dylan Painter each finished with nine points, while Collin Goss contributed eight points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
CAA Preseason Player of the Year Grant Riller led Charleston with 22 points, while Galloway added 14 on the strength of four triples.
Delaware shot 51.9 percent in the opening half while racing out to a 40-34 lead at the break, but hit just 29.6 percent in the second half including a 1 of 15 performance from three-point range.
Martin Ingelsby
"Charleston is a really good defensive team, and they frustrated us on the offensive end. We got some really good looks from three, but some nights they just don't go in. I thought we let our offensive lulls affect us on the other end. They kind of imposed their will in the last 10 minutes, and this will be a learning experience for our group. We had some really good moments against a really good team but you tip your hat, they made some big shots."
Nate Darling
"We missed some open shots and they were making some tough shots, sometimes it's as simple as that. We can't play 33-34 minutes of good basketball and then let them walk all over us at the end. To reach the goals we want to reach, that can't happen."
