PHILADELPHIA – Drexel used a late seven-point run to break away from a tie game and held on for a 61-55 win over Delaware Friday night at the Daskalakis Center.
The long-time rivals were knotted at 50-50 following a Kevin Anderson bucket with 4:14 to play, but after two and a half scoreless minutes, the Dragons' Camren Wynter drilled a three-pointer and added a jumper to put Drexel up five with 1:12 remaining. Matey Juric then added two free throws with 37 seconds left, and Drexel held on from there.
Ryan Allen paced the Blue Hens with 13 points, while Dylan Painter added 10 points and a team-high seven boards. Delaware shot 40.4 percent from the floor and struggled again from deep, hitting just 4 of 18 from three-point range.
Wynter finished with a game-high 18 points for the Dragons, while James Butler added a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Drexel shot just 37.1 percent but held a commanding 43-27 rebounding advantage, including 19 offensive boards.
Delaware took an early 15-10 lead on a Nate Darling layup with 12:24 to play in the first half, but the Blue Hens would score just five more points the rest of the period.
Drexel scored the next 14 points to go in front 24-15, and after an Allen layup at the 6:30 mark brought Delaware within four, the Dragons closed the half with a six-point spurt to take a 30-20 advantage at the break.
Delaware opened the second half by scoring the first seven points of the stanza, closing within 30-27 when Anderson buried a three-pointer with 18:10 to play.
The Blue Hens pulled even at 39-39 on a steal and layup by Johnny McCoy midway through the half, but Drexel answered with seven consecutive points to go up 46-39 with 7:47 remaining. Delaware immediately countered with a 7-0 run of its own, tying the game on a three-point play by Allen at the 5:40 mark, but the Blue Hens could never get the lead.

"This was a tough one. Credit Drexel for making plays down the stretch, they hurt us on the offensive boards and hit some key shots late. We struggled offensively and are not playing good basketball right now, we need to get back to campus and improve. We showed a lot of character to get back in the game but could never take the lead, which puts a lot of pressure on you defensively. We have to find a way to manufacture more points."
Dylan Painter
"Give credit to Drexel but we had some mental lapses and energy lapses that led to offensive rebounds and threes. We need to take pride on the defensive end, and it's tough when they outplay us."
