NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof excitedly announced Tuesday the addition of rising junior Sophie Giezeman to the team's roster.
Giezeman joins the Blue Hens after spending the past two seasons at the University of Maryland.
"We're elated to welcome Sophie into our program," remarked Van de Kerkhof. "As a player, she is a proven winner internationally and collegiately. Her experience and expertise will help our program as we use the spring to prepare for championships and post-season competition this fall. Sophie is a person that shares her excitement for the game and helps others to improve as players."
While at Maryland, Giezeman played in 38 games with 36 starts while helping guide the Terps to two National Championship appearances. The midfielder contributed seven points on two goals and three assists.
"The University of Delaware is synonymous with family," Giezeman, who intends on majoring in finance, stated. "They have a great team that is supported by an amazing staff. The University also touts a great business school and I know my potential is high on and off the field.
Giezeman is the younger sister of Lisa Giezeman, who recently completed a successful four-year career as an All-Region selection for Delaware. Lisa Giezeman collected three CAA Championship titles and the 2016 NCAA Championship ring with the Blue Hens.
"As a person, we knew we would welcome a good one in Sophie as our program has enjoyed a great relationship with the Giezeman family through the years," Van de Kerkhof commented. "Sophie and Lisa's parents, Jos and Danielle, are very supportive of our players group, coaching staff and program. We look forward to continuing this relationship."
