RICHMOND, Va. – Heading in to week two of the season riding the wave of an opening day win, the Blue Hens looked to build on the momentum. That is just what they did with a triumphant 12-4 away win against NJIT.
Freshman attacker Kyle Kivinski had a breakout performance netting the first two collegiate goals of his career. The first came at the very end of the second quarter to push the Delaware lead to 3-0 going in to the second half. He added his second to stretch the lead to seven goals in the fourth quarter.
Kivinski's weekend proved good enough to earn him the honor of being named CAA Rookie of the Week, the first of his career.
While the electric Delaware offense was on full display, their defense stepped up as well. The Blue Hens held the Highlanders offense to just four goals, a big reason for that was junior goalkeeper Matt DeLuca.
DeLuca, who has gained the respect of opposing offensive units across the CAA, had another stellar performance against NJIT for the second year in a row. Allowing just three goals, the junior tallied a whopping 17 saves.
Along with Kivinski, DeLuca received his own praise for his performance against NJIT earning himself the honor of being named the CAA Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
The Blue Hens return to Delaware Stadium to face off against Monmouth University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, as they aim to start the season with three straight wins for the second season in a row.
