NEWARK, Del. – Northeastern hit three consecutive three-pointers late in the second half to break open a two-point game as the Huskies pulled away for a 75-64 victory over Delaware Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Huskies (19-10, 13-4) were clinging to a 57-55 lead with six minutes remaining before Donnell Gresham, Jordan Roland and Vasa Pusica buried three straight triples to make it an 11-point game with 3:23 on the clock. Ryan Allen answered with a layup for the Blue Hens (16-14, 8-9 CAA), but Northeastern scored the next seven points to put the game away.
Allen and Ithiel Horton led Delaware with 16 points apiece, while Eric Carter contributed 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Darian Bryant chipped in with six points and four assists, while Matt Veretto and Jacob Cushing each scored five points.
Despite the loss, Delaware clinched a first round bye in the upcoming CAA Tournament.
Pusica paced the Huskies with 22 points, while Roland added 17 and Bolden Brace finished with 16 points and eight boards.
Northeastern shot 56.3 percent from the floor, including 12 of 26 from three-point range. Delaware shot an even 50 percent from the field, but was just 8 of 25 from behind the arc.
The Huskies used an eight-point spurt in the first half to go in front 26-19 and eventually stretched the margin to 36-26, before the Blue Hens closed within 38-33 at the break. Delaware clawed to within a pair four times in the second half, but could never pull even.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"Northeastern played really well tonight and made some timely threes that hurt us. We battled and got some good looks in the second half, but just missed. We had the game right where we wanted it on our home floor, but could never tie it or take the lead. I thought our guys were fearless and really went after it, but the ball just didn't go in the basket."
