NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Delaware gave top-seeded Hofstra everything it could handle but fell just short in a 78-74 overtime loss to the Pride in the CAA Tournament Semifinals Monday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The Blue Hens (17-16), who rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat William & Mary during Sunday's quarterfinals, trailed Hofstra (27-6) by 15 early in the second half before storming back.
Delaware used a quick eight-point spurt to pull within 40-33 and force a Pride time out with 17:45 remaining, and later closed within 44-42 on a three-point play by Ryan Allen with 12:10 to play. The Blue Hens took their first lead of the half at 53-52 on a jumper by Ithiel Horton with 8:33 left, and neither team led by more than three the rest of regulation.
Eric Carter hit a jumper to again put UD up a point, and after Justin Wright-Foreman buried a three-pointer, Carter hit two clutch free throws with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 67-67. Hofstra's Jalen Ray then missed an off-balance jumper at the buzzer, forcing overtime.
The Pride scored the first three points of the extra session but the Blue Hens battled back again, going in front 74-72 on a baseline jumper by Kevin Anderson at the 1:57 mark. But Wright-Foreman answered with a layup, and then made a steal and fed Ray who was fouled with 16 seconds left.
After Ray hit both free throws Delaware had a final chance, but Anderson stepped on the baseline during a drive to the basket and Ray added another pair from the line to close the scoring.
Horton finished with 21 points and nailed five three-pointers for the Blue Hens, while Anderson added 17 points and six assists. Allen had 14 points on the night, while Carter was the fourth player in double figures with 12 points.
Wright-Foreman set a CAA Tournament record with 42 points, while Tereq Coburn contributed 13 points and Eli Pemberton added 11 of his own.
Delaware hung with the Pride through most of the first half, and the Blue Hens were down just 23-21 after an Anderson three-pointer at the five-minute mark. However Hofstra closed the period with a 15-4 run, while a Wright-Foreman basket in the final seconds gave the Pride a 38-25 halftime advantage.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"That was a heck of a college basketball game. Hofstra is really good, and we left it all out there. It was a back and forth game and our young guys were fabulous, they made big-time plays. Hofstra just made one more play down the stretch. We got some stops in the second half and made some shots, and had opportunities at the end of regulation and in overtime.
This was a heck of a statement for our program, to make the semifinals and battle the top seed to overtime. I love the direction the program is heading and the progress we're making. This is a big offseason for us, we need to remember this feeling and use it as motivation."
