Ludman’s Gem Leads Blue Hens Past Goldey Beacom, 4-0

NEWARK, Del. – Good pitching is the great equalizer and that was on display on a windy Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Sophomore Chris Ludman tossed just the fourth complete game shutout in the past five years for the University of Delaware baseball program to lead the Blue Hens to a 4-0 victory over visiting Goldey Beacom.
Delaware has now won three of its past four games with conference play looming next weekend.
"Terrific effort from Chris today. It was great to see, particularly after Brandon's outing yesterday. The two of them have been outstanding the past two days for us," head coach Jim Sherman said. "The weather definitely made it tough for both sides, but it was good to get our power guys going with Goan and Buglio both having two hits. Defensively, it was one of our better efforts of the year and that's always great to see."
Offensively, Jack Goan and Kevin Buglio combined for four hits, three runs and three RBIs on the day. Three of the four hits were of the extra base variety. Freshman Austin Colmery has reached base safely in seven straight games for the Blue Hens.
Ludman allowed just seven hits and one walk in nine innings of work, while striking out six. It was the first complete game shutout for the Blue Hens since Kyle Hinton's shutout last April.
"I was just able to pound the zone and really trust my defense. I thought Zack and I had good rhythm and I was able stay on top of counts and really mix up my pitches," Ludman said.
It was a pitcher's duel from the start with the Blue Hens getting the only run in the first three innings when Buglio launched a double down the right field line to plate Joseph Carpenter.
Buglio struck again in the fourth with another RBI double and two batters later came around to score on a Goldey Beacom error to push the lead to 3-0.
Goan pushed it to 4-0 with his second home run of the year.
Ludman was outstanding throughout, allowing no more than two runners in an inning. His first complete game shutout ended with thrill when Chance DiFebbo and Vinny Vaccone teamed up on a relay to nail a runner at home to preserve the shutout and clinch the victory.
