Blue Hens Drop Midweek Decision to UMBC, 7-4

NEWARK, Del. – Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other side.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware baseball team faced on Wednesday night as the Blue Hens dropped a midweek decision to UMBC at Bob Hannah Stadium. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak, which was the longest since 2017 for Delaware.
"Tonight, we just got outplayed. UMBC came in ready to play and jumped us from the first pitch, so that's a credit to them," head coach Jim Sherman said. "I thought we came out a little flat and it took us a little bit to get going. We'll regroup and now focus on an important weekend down at Elon against a really tough conference opponent."
Offensively, Delaware pounded out nine hits, two apiece from Joseph Carpenter and Zack Miller. Carpenter extended his streak to 24 consecutive games reaching base safely. Senior Kevin Mohollen had two RBIs on the night.
On the mound, the Blue Hens tossed five different pitchers in the game with sophomore Winston Allen throwing the final three scoreless innings, allowing no baserunners and striking out two.
UMBC got on the board first with two runs in the first and third innings to take an early 4-0 advantage.
Carpenter got the Blue Hens on the board with a single to centerfield in the fourth to plate Erik Bowren. However, the Retrievers would respond with two in the top half of the fifth to push the lead to 6-1.
Mohollen had a big two-RBI single in the home half of the fifth and Jack Goan launched an RBI double in the sixth as Delaware got within 6-4.
UMBC got another run in the seventh and closed things out with three scoreless innings to end the contest.
