Blue Hens Drop Opener at Elon, 12-1

ELON, N.C. – Playing the waiting game is never fun.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware baseball team faced in the opener of a three-game set with Elon, having the original opener of Friday night pushed all the way back to.7 p.m. on Saturday.
The Phoenix won the waiting game and took the opener, 12-1.
"It's never easy when schedules get flipped all around, but that's part of the game and both teams had to deal with it. Credit to Elon, I thought they played well and came up with timely at-bats and we weren't able to do that against one of the better pitchers in this league," head coach Jim Sherman said. "Now we just have to flip our focus to tomorrow's doubleheader and still having an opportunity on winning the series."
Offensively, Delaware's middle of the lineup went 5-for-11 with both Jordan Hutchins and Vinny Vaccone each having multi-hit nights. One of Hutchins' two hits was his third homerun of the season, accounting for the Blue Hens' only run of the night.
Junior Brandon Walter took the loss on the mound, scattering six hits, while striking out nine in 6.2 innings of work.
"I thought Vinny and Jordan had really good at-bats all night and that's good to see, we just weren't able to capitalize on any chances we had tonight," Sherman added.
Hutchins gave the Blue Hens an early lead. Launching a solo homerun over the centerfield wall in just the third at-bat of the game.
Elon wouldn't allow the lead to last long, plating two in the home half of the first to take a 2-1 advantage. The Phoenix would add two more in the bottom of the third to push it to a 4-1 cushion.
Walter and Elon's hurler, Kyle Brnovich, would lock in a duel for the next three-plus innings before the Phoeniix broke it open with eight runs in the final 1.1 innings.
