NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware field hockey head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof announced Friday the addition of eight incoming student-athletes for the 2019 campaign.
"We are excited about this outstanding group of true freshmen and transfer student-athletes that will be joining our team and strengthening our pursuit of excellence through academics, field hockey and community service," stated Van de Kerkhof, who will be in his ninth season at the helm of the Blue Hens in 2019. "All of them have proven championship experience and have contributed to their team's growth and success as a captain or in some kind of leadership role."
Incoming student-athletes include Anna Bertrand (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg/Metro), Ashlyn Carr (Delmar, Del./Delmar/Shore Byrds), Tessa Gote (Amstelveen, The Netherlands/Duke), Kate Gourley (Lisburn, Northern Ireland/Pegasus), Sydney Keld (Middletown, Del./Caravel/WC Eagles), Kerri McClay (Green Village, N.J./Madison/New Heights), Morgan Rigual (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe/High Voltage) and Milan Spooren (Amstelveen, The Netherlands).
"One thing is clear with each new member joining the Blue Hens – they want to be the best and are willing to put in the work to get there," Van de Kerkhof commented. "This is clearly visible in the progress they all made individually since committing to the University of Delaware. I know this group will do the extra work to become better players and therefore helping their team to play even better field hockey.
Van de Kerkhof continued, "They have all visited with our current student-athletes, staff and faculty and have experienced the University and the greater Newark area on numerous occasions. They know what they can expect and what is expected as a Blue Hen student-athlete, which is something that will continue to help with our program goals of competing for championships, being winners in the academic arenas and giving back to the community we live in and serve where possible. As a program, we would like to thank the University of Delaware and its faculty and staff for their assistance and encouragement in making dreams become a reality for so many young and talented Blue Hens. We are looking forward to this group being able to take advantage of the Whitney Athletic Center and the amazing facilities and resources it will offer to their development and experience as student-athletes and people."
