ELON, N.C. – Entering this weekend's series, the University of Delaware baseball team knew that Elon had a stable of arms. The Blue Hens saw that talent first hand in the three-game series.
Sunday saw two good games, but the Phoenix were able to pitch their way to back-to-back wins, 4-1 and 6-0, to sweep the three-game series from the Blue Hens to remain in first place in the CAA.
"I thought these were two pretty good ball games and you have to tip your cap to Elon. They got the pitching and key hits in both games and really had an answer for us anytime we tried to put a rally together," head coach Jim Sherman said. "They are a talented club and we knew that coming in. Now it's time to refocus and know that we still have plenty of opportunities in front of us and we have to keep working."
Senior Vinny Vaccone and freshman Joseph Carpenter both had three hits in the doubleheader, with Carpenter's home run being the lone run for the Blue Hens on the day.
Sophomore Chris Ludman allowed just four earned in six innings of work in the first game, while freshman Joey Silan and junior Derek Wakeley split the second game of the doubleheader.
Game 1
Ludman and Elon starter, George Kirby, locked in a pitcher's duel early in the first game (a seven-inning contest). Neither hurler would allow a run for the first three innings.
Carpenter got the Blue Hens on the board first, launching a home run in the top of the fourth to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
Elon answered with four in its half of the fourth to quickly turn make it a 4-1 advantage against the Blue Hens.
The final three innings saw each offense have just two runners the rest of the way as the Phoenix held on for the 4-1 victory.
Game 2
Elon kept momentum going from the first game, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
Phoenix starter Jared Wetherbee would hold get challenged in the fourth with Carpenter and Vaccone ripping back-to-back two-out singles, but Elon would get out of it unscathed.
Elon added one in the fifth and two in the eighth to put away the game two victory, 6-0.
