Tuesday night at Bob Hannah Stadium, confidence was on full display as the University of Delaware baseball team picked up its fifth straight victory with a 13-2 defeat of in-state rival Delaware State on a perfect weather night under the new lights.
The Blue Hens tied a season-high with 14 hits, eight of which were of the extra base variety, which was a season-high. A new school record was established with five triples racked up on the night by Delaware, previously breaking a single-game record of 4, which had occurred three times in program history.
"Proud of the way our guys have continued to come to the field with an urgency and focus for each and every game. Our at-bats are getting better, our swings are getting better and we've gotten some outstanding pitching efforts recently," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We can't lose that edge, we have to keep coming to the stadium knowing we have to get better every single time we touch the field."
Four different Blue Hens pounded out two hits apiece with Erik Bowren, Joseph Carpenter, Jack Goan and Vinny Vaccone all having a good day at the plate for Delaware. Bowren notched a team-high three RBIs, while Carpenter added two triples on the evening.
Freshman Jack Dubecq continued to throw the ball well, tossing 6.0 innings of work, allowing just two earned runs and seven hits, while striking out four on the afternoon. Classmate Tommy Pomatto made his collegiate debut, throwing 2.0 scoreless frames before Chance DiFebbo closed it down in the ninth.
"I've said it for this several times recently, but good pitching can really set the tone and Jack did a nice job settling in and allowing the offense to quickly get to work put up some runs," Sherman added.
Delaware State got a run in the top of the first, but the Blue Hens answered in the second with back-to-back doubles from Zack Miller and Goan to plate Delaware's first run of the day.
An RBI groundout from Bowren plated a second run and grabbed a lead they would never relinquish. Delaware would add four in the third and two in the third, capitalizing on some DSU miscues to push the lead to 6-1.
Carpenter would launch his first triple of the game into right center in the home half of the fifth as the Blue Hens would plate two more runs. RBIs from Bowren and Goan would put more runs on the scoreboard.
Pomatto and DiFebbo came out of the pen to toss three scoreless innings to end the contest and secure Delaware's fifth straight victory.
