Blue Hens Salvage Series with the Long Ball in Saturday Split

Delaware keeps its tournament hopes alive with a win in the series finale as Goan homers twice on the day
Â
"I'm proud of the way our guys fought all weekend long," said head coach Jim Sherman. "We had a few bounces go the other way and it could have been easy for us to hang our heads, but we kept battling."
Â
Sophomore Chris Ludman got the ball for the Blue Hens (21-30, 9-12 CAA) in game two and delivered a quality start of 6.2 innings with only three earned runs on a pair of strikeouts and just one walk.
Â
While Ludman was key on the bump, Delaware finally got timely hitting and was able to keep its early lead after jumping out in front in all three games of the series. In the finale, senior Kevin Mohollen doubled home freshman Austin Colmery to open the scoring in the third and senior Erik Bowren jumped all over a pitch to send it over the left-field wall to make it 3-0 Delaware.
Â
Hofstra (17-29-1, 9-12 CAA) would respond with a run in the fourth and managed to tie the game in the fifth with a pair of runs before the Blue Hens erupted for four in the home half, including back-to-back big flies from junior Jack Goan and sophomore Zack Miller.
Â
The home run was Goan's second of the day, both no-doubters to left field to up his team leading total to seven on the year.
Â
The Pride scratched across three runs between the sixth and the seventh innings, but Delaware was able to tack on insurance in the sixth when freshman Joseph Carpenter drove home Bowren to make it 8-4.
Â
Carpenter put together three hits and three RBIs between the pair of games and Bowren another three hits, two RBIs and three runs in the split.
Junior CJ Schaible worked a strong 2.0 innings of relief, striking out three before handing it off to classmate Derek Wakeley who handled the final out to seal the deal on a scoreless night out of the Delaware bullpen.
Â
In game one, the Blue Hens got off to a fast start, plating a pair in the first on a sophomore Jordan Hutchins double and Carpenter sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Hofstra began to chip away and took the lead in the fifth when an error extended the inning and made it 4-3.
Â
Carpenter would pick up another RBI in the seventh to make it a one-run game at 5-3, but some insure for the Pride down the stretch made the deficit too much to overcome.
Â
The Blue Hens' win in the series finale keeps their CAA Tournament hopes alive and will be watching Sunday's matchups across the conference closely before the final weekend of the regular season begins on Thursday as Charleston comes to Bob Hannah Stadium at 7 p.m.
