Delaware claims its second baseball Rookie of the Year in as many seasons.
RICHMOND, Va. – The Delaware baseball program took home five All-Colonial Athletic Association honors Tuesday, led by freshman Joseph Carpenter's Rookie of the Year award as voted on by the conference's coaches.
Â
This is the second Rookie of the Year captured by Delaware in as many seasons as Billy Sullivan IV earned the honor in 2018.
Â
Carpenter started every game at first base for the Blue Hens and put together a 24-game hitting streak in the heart of the season to help tally a .300 batting average. His .459 slugging percentage and .827 OPS led the team to go along with his share in the team lead for triples with four.
Â
Carpenter managed to reach base in 44 of the final 46 games of his rookie season and had hits in 30 of the final 33 contests. After losing his hitting streak, he bounced back with a 4-for-6 night at UMBC with a double and a home run to help him capture his first CAA Rookie of the Week award.
Â
Earning his fourth career third-team selection is senior Kevin Mohollen who became just the second player in Delaware baseball history to play in 220-plus career games. He patrolled center field for the Blue Hens and hit in the lead-off spot in all but one game this season to lead the team with a .274 average in conference games.
Â
Mohollen leaves Delaware as part of the 200 hits club, one of just 37 players in program history, with 242 to rank 14th.
Â
Grabbing first-team honors is sophomore Jordan Hutchins who played and started in every game and led the team with 42 RBIs to rank ninth in the CAA. He hit .272 with 16 doubles, second in the conference, and four home runs.
Â
Joining Carpenter on the All-Rookie team are fellow freshmen Austin Colmery and Joey Silan. Colmery was another mainstay in the Blue Hens' outfield and led the team with a .413 on-base percentage to rank inside the top-10 in the CAA.
Â
Silan spent the majority of his rookie campaign making starts, appearing in 16 contests on the mound with an ERA of 5.53. His best performance of the season came in a crucial game at UNCW where he threw 8.0 innings with eight punch outs while scattering five hits for three earned runs to help Delaware clinch the series. The effort helped earn him the CAA Rookie of the Week award.
Â
The Blue Hens season came to a close shy of a CAA Tournament berth, but the last time Delaware missed the conference's playoffs, it came back to win the championship the following season.
