WILMINGTON, N.C. – Conference series wins are never easy. Conference series wins on the road add a whole new level of difficult.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware baseball team did this weekend in one of the toughest places to play in the CAA as the Blue Hens split a doubleheader with UNCW, 9-5 and 10-2, to take the series victory from the Seahawks.
With two series left in CAA play, the Blue Hens are just a ½ game out of third place in the conference.
"We go into every conference weekend looking to win the series and that's what we were able to do in one of the tougher places to play in the league," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We knew getting into the tournament would come down to the final weekend and that's exactly what's going to happen. Every pitch, every at-bat is critical this time of year and I like where our guys are at right now."
Senior Erik Bowren continued his outstanding weekend with a 5-for-9 showing at the plate on the day, scoring two runs and driving in two, while sophomore Jordan Hutchins added three hits and three RBIs. Senior Kevin Mohollen scored four runs on the afternoon for the Blue Hens offense.
The pitching was led by a career-best performance by freshman Joey Silan, who tossed eight innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight for his third win of the year.
Game 1 – Delaware 9, UNCW 5
The Blue Hens started the offense parade early with a lead-off single from Mohollen, a double by Bowren and an RBI groundout from Hutchins to claim a 1-0 advantage.
Mohollen and Bowren struck again in the third. A lead-off triple by Mohollen, followd with a single up the middle push the lead to 2-0. An RBI single by Vinny Vaccone and two wild pitches led to three more runs and a 5-0 cushion for Delaware.
UNCW would get two back in the third, but the Blue Hens got one back, taking advantage of two UNCW errors to make it 6-2.
Silan was dominant on the hill, allowing just two earned in a career-best eight innings of work for the Blue Hens.
Mohollen would score another run in the seventh and freshman Zach Lesher ripped an RBI single in the eight to make it an 8-2 contest.
Another RBI single from Hutchins gave the Blue Hens insurance in the ninth en route to the 9-5 victory.
Game 2 – UNCW 10, Delaware 2
UNCW would grab a lead early, taking a 5-0 cushion after two innings.
Hutchins would get Delaware on the board in the fourth with an RBI double, but the Seahawks continued to add to the lead, pushing the advantage to 10-1 before Bowren ripped an RBI single in the eighth to score the game's final run,.
