Blue Hen Bats Erupt in 15-6 Triumph at UMBC

Carpenter collects four hits to lead the offensive outburst in Baltimore
Â
After UMBC (20-26, 6-14 AEC) pushed across a run in the home half of the first, the Blue Hens (20-28, 8-10 CAA) erupted for crooked numbers in the next three innings. In the second, freshman Zach Lesher doubled down the right field line to score junior Jack Goan and Carpenter to put Delaware in front.
Â
Lesher matched his career-best with three hits, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Â
The inning would not end there when freshman Austin Colmery brought home sophomore Zach Miller with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 Blue Hen lead.
Â
Two more Delaware runs followed in the third after freshman Tommy Pomatto worked a clean home half of the second on the bump. Carpenter scolded a lead-off double down the left field line and junior Vinny Vaccone brought him home, reaching on an error. The hits kept coming for Delaware when Goan roped a ball into left field to score Vaccone.
Â
The Retrievers were able to scrape across a run in the bottom of the third, but the Blue Hens put up a four-spot in the fourth as sophomore Jordan Hutchins had the big hit, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double down the left field line. Vaccone wasted no time trading places with Hutchins on a double off the left center field wall.
Â
Pomatto worked 3.0 innings, allowing just two hits and a pair of runs, while picking up a strikeout and Hutchins had a 2-for-5 night with three RBIs and a pair of runs.
Â
UMBC answered in the fourth with a three-run outburst against the bullpen, but the bottom of the Blue Hens' lineup was productive all night as Comery singled and came around to score. Carpenter was a tough out all night and picked up his third hit of the ball game to score senior Erik Bowren and Mohollen to make it 12-5 Blue Hens and a failed pick-off attempt tacked on another when Hutchins scored.
Â
Finally, some arms settled in and there were some scoreless innings, but Carpenter got back to the plate and blasted a two-run home run to left field to make it 15-5. UMBC pieced together a run in the home half of the eighth before sophomore Joey Hass came out of the Delaware bullpen, picking off a runner and striking out the next two batters.
Â
Junior CJ Schaible worked 3.1 innings, allowing just one run on three hits and collecting two strikeouts before Haass shut the door, working 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out a pair and allowed just one baserunner on a walk.
Â
Just a pair of CAA series remain for the Blue Hens, both at Bob Hannah Stadium, as Hofstra comes to town for a three-game set beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
