PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. – Roberto Nieves set a three-round Blue Hen record by carding an eight under par 202 to finish in a tie for fourth place at the Golfweek Program Championship on Monday and Tuesday.
Nieves, who tied the Delaware single round record with a 64 during Monday's opening round and followed with a 69 in the second round of the day, fired another one under par 69 on Tuesday on the par 70, 6,526-yard Caledonia Golf & Fish Club course.
Nieves easily broke the program's previous 54-hole record of 206 set by Joe McLister at the James Madison Invitational on Oct. 10-11, 2005. He began his final round on the 10th hole and was three over through the back nine, but rallied with birdies on the first, second, fourth and eighth holes to finish the round at one under.
Nieves, who also tied for fourth place at last week's Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate, was the Blue Hens' low finisher for the second consecutive invitational. Agustin Segundo Oliva Pinto of UNCW took home medalist honors by finishing at 18 under par.
Matt Pulgini carded a six over par 74-71-71-216 to tie for 36th place at the tournament, while Jack Melville tied for 57th place with an 11 over par 74-73-74-221.
Hugo Kedzlie tied for 62nd place with a 13 over par 77-75-71-223, while RJ Wren finished 73rd with a 16 over par 72-75-79-226. Playing as an individual, Michal Bargenda fired a 17 over par 73-76-78-227 to finish in a tie for 74th place.
The Blue Hens recorded a 285 team score on Tuesday, finishing 11th out of 15 squads with an 857 total. Jacksonville captured the tournament title with an 828 score.
Delaware returns to action on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 when the Blue Hens compete in the Villanova Fall Invitational in Malvern, Pa.
