Blue Hens Battle A10 Power La Salle To The Wire In 3-2 Loss
9/12/2019 11:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Walking off the field, it was clear how far the University of Delaware women's soccer program had come.
The Blue Hens battled and fought to the final whistle, taking perennial Atlantic 10 power La Salle to the limit, but coming up just short, 3-2 on Thursday night in Philadelphia.
In previous years, an effort like that might have been cause for happiness and a content attitude, but the Blue Hens knew how close they were and expectations have clearly been lifted.
Olivia Schuck and Elizabeth Weimer both scored their first goals of the year for Delaware, but a late goal by the Explorers was the difference in a hard-fought battle from both sides.
The Blue Hens attacked and controlled most of the contest, firing off 18 shots on the night, forcing the La Salle goalie to come up with seven goals, several of which were nearly goals for Delaware.
Dating back to the end of the 2018 season, Delaware is 6-5-1 in its past 13 games, with all five losses being one-goal contests.
In 18 games last year, the Blue Hens scored 12 total goals. In seven games in 2019, Delaware has already found the back of the net 11 times.
What They Said
"Our girls are gutted by this one and rightfully so. We give La Salle credit, they definitely executed their game plan and they make it really tough to play, but on the night, I thought we were very good. We created a ton of chances and just needed a bit more quality to get the extra goal. But that said, to come to the home field of a top A10 team and control the game says a lot about how far we've come as a program. I'm proud of these kids and their effort tonight." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
