Blue Hens Drop Heartbreaker to #13 Rutgers, 1-0, in Double OT

NEWARK, Del. – Something special is happening in Newark.
That was evident for all who watched the University of Delaware women's soccer team go toe-to-toe with one of the country's best team in Rutgers.
The Blue Hens battled and fought the 13th-ranked Scarlet Knights into double overtime, but a penalty kick just over two minutes into the final OT period would help Rutgers escape with a 1-0 victory.
Sophomore Kamryn Stablein was outstanding all afternoon long, racking up eight saves, including multiple of the game-saving variety. It was the 10thtime in the past 12 games dating back to last fall that Delaware limited its opponent to one goal or fewer.
Junior Riley Dixon led the Blue Hens offensive attack, beating her defender on multiple occasions to draw a double team, but all four of her shots were just off the mark.
What They Said
"It's unfortunate how things had to end today, but that said, I could not be prouder of our team; their effort, attention to detail and execution. Rutgers is a legitimate top-20 team in the country and we didn't just compete with them, we gave ourselves chances to win. This team is strong, they are special and it's because they understand the importance of why they want to be great. We embody Blue Hen spirit through and through. I couldn't be prouder!" – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
