Blue Hens Drop Tough 1-0 Decision At Charleston In CAA Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Learning experiences aren't always fun.
The University of Delaware women's soccer team got a lesson in that in its CAA opener on Thursday night in Charleston when the Cougars of the College of Charleston used an early goal to hold on for a 1-0 victory in the first night of league play.
C of C found an opening on a corner kick in the first 10 minutes of the game to notch the game's lone goal.
Delaware would ratchet up the pressure late in the first half, including two great chances, one an indirect kick from Alexis Montgomery right outside the box and another on a great move from Anna Diffendal, who's shot went just right of the next.
The Blue Hens outshot the Cougars, 16-12, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Defensively, Delaware has now held 12 of its past 14 opponents to one goal or less.
What They Said
"This is certainly a difficult way to start conference play, but also could serve as a great learning experience for our group. We played well enough to win the game and certainly created some dangerous opportunities, but you can't lose concentration in the box and spot an opponent a lead. Harsh lesson for our kids, but everyone needs to learn at some point. All we can do now is turn the page to a tough JMU team on Sunday." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
